Requirements for Teaching in the GCC

Ensure you meet the essential requirements for teaching positions across the Gulf region. With a variety of schools available, requirements may vary.

Essential Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Education or subject-specific degree with teaching qualification
  • Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) or equivalent teaching certification
  • Minimum 2 years of teaching experience (NB. some schools will accept ECTs)
  • Native English speaker or excellent English proficiency
  • Clean criminal background check from home country
  • Medical fitness certificate (Country specific requirements)

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree in Education or relevant subject
  • Experience teaching in international schools
  • Familiarity with British, American, or IB curriculum
  • Leadership experience (for senior positions)
  • Strong ICT skills and experience with educational technology

Most teaching contracts in the GCC are for 2 years initially, with options for renewal. This provides job security while allowing flexibility for career progression. NB. Some schools offer 1 year contracts as determined by Visa requirements in their country.

The academic year typically runs from late August/early September to June, similar to the Northern Hemisphere schedule. Some schools may have slight variations.

Can I bring my family?
